A fine Arts and Crafts oak Sideboard by Shapland and Petter. A rare and wonderful piece with many exquisite inlays in a medium oak. It has a central mirrored display surface over two draws, below which is an open shelf. This is flanked by two tall cupboards each with an open display shelf above which a gallery for further display has an inlaid roundel at the rear. The two cupboard doors have extensive inlays in the stylised Art and Crafts tradition, particularly well executed in the Shapland and Petter fashion. Stylised copper strap hinges and handles provide the complete Arts and Crafts aesthetic, the whole is raised by eight legs.

This model was on exhibition at the Budapest Exhibition of 1902. This exhibition was the first known mention of Shapland and Petter pieces in any exhibition prior to this time (ref. Shapland and Petter Ltd of Barnstable by Daryl Bennett page 38). This entry was reviewed by The Furniture Record and The Furnisher (November 1902 page 547) “We give a few illustrations of some notable exhibits foremost among which must be placed the goods of Messrs Shapland and Petter Ltd., of Barnstable and 61, Berners Street, London. The high-class productions of this firm are too well known to the best houses of this country to need much description. The beautiful sideboard which appears on page 547, together with the music cabinet, will give a fair idea of the quality of this firm’s exhibit. The illustrations themselves give a sufficient idea of the inlaid work and finish of these goods. With such noteworthy representatives of British art furniture we may feel quite satisfied that our prestige is being maintained”. The image referred to above is the same model as the piece now made available and is also shown in the Shapland and Petter book by Daryl Bennett on page 38.

A rare opportunity to acquire a substantial piece of recorded Arts and Crafts prestige.
