Modernist Skyscraper-design Cabinet with Drawers

Attributed to Sir Ambrose Heal

Three drawers with cupboard over in Hungarian Ash veneers with Walnut to top and sides.

Circa 1935

A Bedroom suite to this design, of which the Wardrobe conforms to this piece, was designed in 1933 by Sir Ambrose Heal for Miss Dodie Smith. Dodie Smith was a member of Heal’s staff and became a mistress of Ambrose Heal. She was also a playwright known for her 1931 play ‘Autumn Crocus’, and later the author of the novel ‘101 Dalmatians’ which went on to become a Disney cartoon. This piece is likely to have been a one-off production of the same design in a different finish.

Dodie Smith’s wardrobe is illustrated in Susanna Goodden, A History of Heals (1984), page 78. Others pieces of the suite appear in the Studio Yearbook 1934, page 51
