This is a stunning example of fine quality British geometric Art Deco furniture. Attributed to Hille, the matched set comprises a rare extending 8-seater pedestal dining table with 6 geometric dining chairs and 2 carver armchairs in a related design. The finish is in both straight-grain and figured walnut veneers applied in a highly effective manner that emphasises the design of each piece. Chairs in this style feature in the catalogues of high class furniture retailers, including P E Gane of Bristol, from 1930 onwards.
This dining set has been fully restored using traditional methods and with no corners cut. Old polish is removed and the shellac replaced, to this layers of wax are added and the process is completed with a final burnishing. This technique gives pieces a much deeper, richer and more long lasting finish while allowing the underlying veneers to come through in the most vibrant way. The chairs have been reupholstered to a high standard using a faux suede fabric which is comfortable, long wearing, resistant to major stains and meets international fire regulations.
