| Chrissie is currently researching a book which will include jewellery of The Suffragette Movement. The stones were usually peridot, seed pearls and amethyst. The colours - green, white and violet - represented the call to Give Women the Vote. If you have a piece of Suffragette jewellery or any family history relating to the subject, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please email sales@designgallery.co.uk |

THE CULT OF BEAUTY
The Aesthetic Movement
A major new exhibition opens at the Victoria & Albert Museum on 2 April. “The Cult of Beauty” examines the development of the Aesthetic Movement in art and design.
The late 19th Century saw the development of the artistic ideal of beauty for its own sake. Championed by such prominent figures as Oscar Wilde, E.W. Godwin and James McNeill Whistler, Aestheticism embodied an ideal in which a sense of beauty, mood and elegance transcended the subject matter or moral concerns.
Whilst Aestheticism in the high arts remained a fashionable preserve of the wealthy, the ideals of the movement were also personified in the lifestyle of its patrons - most notably by Wilde himself.
A fashionable culture of ‘The House Beautiful’ saw the embellishment of building exteriors with floral motifs such as lilies and sunflowers. Domestic interiors were also reformed, influenced by the ‘ebonised’ Japanese style of dark wood accented with gold decorative effects.
The exhibition begins in the 1860s with the romantic bohemians such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William and Edward Burne-Jones, and the painters of grand classical subjects including Frederic Leighton and G.F.Watts. It moves on to look at the work of multi-talented designers like Walter Crane, Christopher Dresser and Alfred Gilbert.
The Cult of Beauty runs until 17 July 2011. Tickets bookable. You can also see a selection of Aesthetic Movement furniture in the gallery and the furniture warehouse. |

| Design Gallery furniture in luxury show home |
|
| ...visited by celebrity singer - Shane Filan |
|
|

The lead singer of pop band Westlife, flew in from Ireland especially to visit Warlingham last week.
The Surrey fan joined friends at the launch of Parkview House, part of an exclusive, gated development by Vedere Properties in Littlewold Drive.
He fell in love with the mix of contemporary and period style in the show home, which has been furnished with original Art Deco furniture by The Design Gallery of Westerham.
Shane – who owns a property development company in Ireland with his eldest brother Finbarr – admired the Hercule Poirot-style cloudback lounge suite and an impressive Art Deco desk. “I love unusual furniture with great detailing. High quality pieces are important to me,” he said.
“It’s my family that makes a house a home,” Shane continued. “This house has an amazing kitchen, which is big enough for our three kids to be in, a great layout and wonderful light. I like the programmable acoustics system too!”.
The Littlewold development of three luxury homes is set in an unrivalled position high on the North Downs, offers panoramic, south-facing views across unspoilt countryside and Woldingham Golf Course. Parkview House is on the market at £2.3 million.
Littlewold Drive can be viewed by appointment through Fine and Country of Woldingham. The Design Gallery, run by John and Chrissie Masters, is based at 5 The Green, Westerham, Kent (01959 561234, www.designgallery.co.uk).
